From time to time, Families Like Us features one family from our group!
Who are they?
Dad - Billy, Mom - Laurie, Isaac is now 4 yrs old. We fostered him for almost a year and adopted him just after his second birthday. Vivianna is almost 2 yrs old. We adopted her from Generations Adoptions in Waco when she was two days old.
Can you share one favorite family memory?
One Friday evening Laurie and I realized we had no plans all weekend. So Saturday morning we packed up the kids and dogs in our van and drove somewhere we’d never been before – Oklahoma City. We spent the afternoon at the zoo, the mall, and ate dinner at some restaurant we’d never heard of. That night, we all crowded into a small hotel with a king size bed. Sunday morning, we had breakfast at another restaurant. Then we drove home and made it back just after naptime. To this day, it’s one of our favorite vacations.
Do you have a favorite adoption-related book?
Successful Adoption: A Guide to Christian Families
Do you have a favorite public-response story?
A lady asked me in a mixed group setting, “Do you wear boxers or briefs? I heard that can really affect fertility.”
Does your family have any favorite pastimes?
Any events (picnics, parades, library readings) targeted at an African-American audience. Isaac has so much fun watching people and loudly yelling, “Hey! They’re African-American like me!”
A challenge related to adoption you are willing to share?
As accepting as people may try to be, they aren’t always going to be appropriate. When strangers say inappropriate things, we’ve been caught off guard and had to fumble for patience. But loved ones can have the same affect. It’s even more disappointing when they say inappropriate things about our kids or adoption in general. They require a different kind of forgiveness.
